Trend Alert: Womenswear for Men

While it’s nothing new for women to borrow from the men’s section, the idea of men wearing clothes designed for women is less common. Sure, we see idols in drag all the time, but do we ever see men wearing stuff from the women’s department unironically? This summer, the answer is yes, as these five, fashion-forward men show us that style really is genderless.

In Seungri‘s version of Big Bang‘s Alive Special Edition (released in June), there’s a picture of him wearing a leopard print shirt. As it turns out, this shirt is from one of Roberto Cavalli’s womenswear lines! To personalize the look, Seungri paired the shirt with a red jacket, which disguised the billowy sleeves, and removed the narrow, self-fabric belt.  [Source: UKBigBang]

Also in June, style icon G-Dragon was spotted in Paris wearing a black maxi skirt with a red belt and white t-shirt. During that trip, he did a photo shoot with Harper’s Bazaar, where he wore a black, knee-length skirt with his skateboarding gear.

On June 28th, in order to fit in with the “beach theme” of the Mnet 20′s Choice Awards, the Asian Soul J.Y. Park himself wore a black, wraparound maxi skirt with a slit up the back, paired with black gladiator sandals. He dressed the outfit up with a cap-sleeved, white button-down and red bowtie.

2AM‘s Jo Kwon made good on his promise to perform in Jeffrey Campbell‘s 19.5cm shoes with no heel support on July 1st, giving everyone something to talk about. He completed his dramatic stage costume with tight black pants and a dramatic, feathered collar that extended from his nose to his waist.

B2ST‘s Junhyung had some fun on the set of the ‘Midnight Sun‘ (released July 21) photo shoot, while wearing a jacket and pants from Ashish‘s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. He made the look his own with a fringed scarf and a yellow t-shirt.  [Source: Cube-Style]

JYPE releases rehearsal photos of the Wonder Girls, 2PM, 2AM, & JJ Project for upcoming ‘JYP Nation’ concert

There are just two days to go until the JYP Nation concert kicks off, and its artists are busy at work in the rehearsal room completing their finishing touches.

JYP Entertainment shared a slew of behind-the-scenes photos of the artists hard at work with allthatkpops to give fans a glimpse into the family-like atmosphere. Included are cuts of the members working together for their collaboration stages, such as Sohee playing around with Junsu, and Junho and Seulong taking a break in a corner of the room together.

Junho showed a playful side by taking a photo with Sun‘s puppy while J.Y. Park can be seen working on new songs at the keyboard at any spare moment. JJ Project looks as if they’re flying about the room during their rehearsal cuts with the same youthful energy they’re known for on stage.

The pictures only serve to heighten the anticipation for their upcoming concert!

K-Pop’s ‘All-in-One’ System: Why it works for Idol stars

A recent article posted by OhmyStar assessed the blueprint of the K-pop system, pointing out all the steps entertainment agencies take to create a successful, genuine K-Pop star.

Foreign Language

SM entertainment representative Kim Young Min revealed, ‘The first thing 5th grader Boa learned was foreign languages. It was the one thing that would allow Boa to stand on a world-wide stage. During her vacation periods, she would stay in Japan to study language and receive intensive training. In order to learn the language proficiently, localization would prove crucial.”

For idol groups nearing debut, knowledge of foreign languages are vital. Japanese, Chinese, and English are just the very basics. Now French and Spanish are taught as well. Cube Entertainment representative, Hong Seung Sung stated, “Not just keeping in mind future overseas promotions for BTOB, but also taking into consideration the members’ own interests and talents, the group was taught Japanese, English and French.” The possession of cultural understanding and language acquisition of the country at hand is the strategy that also proved successful for well-known producer, ‘Brave Brothers’.

Japan’s entertainment publishing company’s editor Matsubara stated, “Artists like Boa and TVXQ that received thorough Japanese language training were able to increase their profiles on variety programs in Japan. This strategy is the biggest factor for success.

J-Pop artist-like familiarity VS. The ‘Beatles’ Project

The debuts of Boa, TVXQ and Girls’ Generation differ from the beginning. TVXQ made their Japanese debut in 2005 while they were receiving much love in Korea. AVEX’s live director Kikuda Yoko says, “The group built up a fan base by singing and speaking fluently in Japanese and by performing diligently on small stages and eventually worked their way up to performing at the Tokyo Dome in 2009.

On the other hand, Girls’ Generation’s debut falls into the ‘Beatles’ Project category. Much like that of legendary group, The Beatles’, “Girls’ Generation avoided the localization strategy in Japan and instead released songs in Korea. It’s an approach where they raise their popularity first with the release of songs and then go on to visit fans to ‘quench their thirst’, said representative Lee Young Min.

Like the difference between TVXQ and Girls’ Generation, the growth of social network services, such as Twitter and me2day, are once again transforming the angle of approach for newly debuting idols. Representative of CUBE entertainment, creator of 4Minute, B2ST, G.Na, and BTOB suggested, “In the long run, a global approach proves more effective than localizing your artists. Planning tactical promotions and showcasing K-Pop’s diverse charm is advisable.

Signing native artists such as 2pm’s Nickhun, 2NE1’s Sandara Park, MissA’s Jia and Fei, and f(x)’s Victoria into the record label also plays a part in the global phenomenon.

However, you cannot forget about the music and choreography to which the whole world can easily relate. CJ E&M representative stated, “The songs are not foreign to the world-wide audience because they follow a structure commonly used in the Americas and Europe. Beginning with an intro and bridge, followed by the chorus and the bridge again, then repeating with the chorus is the ‘Hook song’ format that allows even those who do not know the language, to enjoy the songs.

The All-In-One System: Sex education, Psychological consultation and more

The K-POP artist’s upbringing/developing system revolves largely on casting and training, producing, and global promotion. JYPE’s producer J.Y. Park stated, “On the outside it may seem that an idol group’s training follows a universally standardized system; however it is more fitting to make the process about finding each artist’s unique style and individuality. With this system, never seen before in any other country, each trainee can grow into a well-prepared artist.

This nurturing system that J.Y. Park has revealed is the ‘All-In-One’ system. With the one side which includes vocal, dancing, acting, and acrobatic abilities, there is another complementary side that comprises of foreign language, academic management, reading, and personal consultation which helps with character building.

Representative Hong Seung Sung added, “Besides the technical training that includes vocal, dance, acting, language, weight training, acrobatics, and rap, artists carry out community service and other specialized character building classes such as sex-education, leadership, drug awareness, mind control and etiquette training, all provided along with psychological therapy as well.

Then, from where does the competitive edge of K-Pop stars come? Representative Shin Dong Young pointed out that K-Pop artists’ encompass a plethora of positive aspects such as flawless dancing abilities that shine even when compared to the striking appearances of western artists. Suh Hwang Wook, an executive of Google stated, “An easy to remember melody, unique appearances and choreography, and a music style different from that of other countries yet easy to relate to, is the biggest positive aspect [of K-Pop].

KBS’s director of content, Kwon Oh Suk said, “Combining idols with unique looks and specialties is a ‘Multi-Targeting Strategy”, and is helpful in attacking a more diverse fan-base, just like the diversity of the groups themselves.

Is the K-pop system what you imagined it would be like? Let us know in the comments below!

J.Y. Park announces he will no longer be reprimanding 2PM

J.Y. Park may have given a reason as to why 2PM member Wooyoung was the first of the group to release a solo album.

The July 19th ‘5 Million Dollar Man‘ special of KBS2‘s ‘Happy Together 3‘ featured singer and producer J.Y. Park as well as actress Min Hyo Rin and 2PM’s Nichkhun.

J.Y. Park announced that he would no longer discipline the 2PM members. Now that 2PM is a top idol group, J.Y. Park is determined to approach them as fellow artists, instead of his students.

Nichkhun responded, “We were really upset when he told us that. We feel like we still need his complaints.”

J.Y. Park added, “After I told them that, the 2PM members came to see me individually one after the other, and I was really touched.” The MCs then jokingly asked, “Did you give the members the opportunity to release solo albums based on the order they came to see you?”

Giving it some thought, J.Y. Park then remarked, “Come to think of it, Wooyoung was the first to come see me,” causing the guests to laugh.

Also on the episode, Nichkhun revealed his own methods to receive less reprimand from J.Y. Park.

J.Y. Park explains why he never opted for cosmetic surgery on ‘Happy Together 3′

Singer and producer J.Y. Park explained the reason why he never opted for cosmetic surgery on KBS 2TV‘s ’Happy Together 3‘.

On the July 19th broadcast, comedian Park Mi Sun brought up the topic by complimenting actress Min Hyo Rin‘s beautiful features. She remarked, “She has such a masterpiece of a nose. This isn’t a nose that was worked on.

Not too long ago, many were speculating whether the actress had gotten a nose job. She denied the rumors on a recent broadcast and even had X-rays to prove it. Park Mi Sun then asked J.Y. Park whether he was ever tempted by cosmetic surgery.

J.Y. Park smiled and answered, “I don’t invest my money in things that have a low probability of success,” causing everyone in the studio to burst into laughter.

2PM‘s Nichkhun also guested on the same episode.

J.Y. Park talks about his infamous ‘vinyl fashion’ on ‘Happy Together 3′

Singer J.Y. Park admitted that his infamous ‘vinyl fashion’ caused him to be temporarily banned from performing on television.

J.Y. Park guest-featured on the July 19th ‘5 Million Dollar Man‘ special of KBS 2TV‘s ‘Happy Together 3‘.

When the emcees revealed photos of him from the 90′s sporting his infamous ‘vinyl outfit’, J.Y. Park could not hide his embarrassment. He explained that at the time, he did not understand society’s logic that said celebrities who wore earrings or colored their hair would have a negative influence on young teens, restricting them from performing on television.

He explained that he began to defy these public opinions in his own way. When he went to rehearsals for television programs, he would dress in appropriate attire, but when it came time for the live performance, he would shock everyone by standing on stage in his vinyl fashion.

Because of the vinyl, J.Y. Park was unfortunately suspended from performing on television for a short period of time.

Meanwhile, 2PM‘s Nichkhun along with J.Y. Park’s fellow ’5 Million Dollar Man’ co-star Min Hyo Rin also guest-featured on this episode.

Min Hyo Rin used to be a trainee for JYP Entertainment?

It has been revealed that actress Min Hyo Rin was once a trainee at JYP Entertainment.

On the July 19th episode of KBS‘s ‘Happy Together 3′, Min Hyo Rin explained, “In order to debut in a girl group, I learned how to dance and sing at JYP Entertainment for seven months, but since it was difficult to travel from Taegu to Seoul, and since I wasn’t very good, I quit.

The fact that Min Hyo Rin could have traveled the path of an idol after receiving the appropriate training along with having released the song “Wait Wolf” surprised the set. J. Y. Park commented, “I didn’t know that Min Hyo Rin was a trainee at JYP. She came and went while I was in America.

J. Y. Park regretfully noted, “The JYP trainees who quit and went on to become great celebrities include Min Hyo Rin, IU, SISTAR‘s Hyorin, B2STs Kikwang, and 2NE1‘s CL.“ He added, “Because of this, I can’t watch TV these days,” causing everyone on the set to explode in laughter. As he considered his loss, he continued, “I seriously can’t figure out why this happened.

He honestly confessed, “Although watching these stars that I lost do well on TV is nice, I still feel a bit envious and disappointed.

During filming for the upcoming broadcast of KBS 2TV‘s ‘Happy Together 3‘, J.Y Park stated, “Though the agency’s casting director discovered Nichkhun and brought him over, I was skeptical after seeing him whether he could actually become a singer.”

He continued, “When I first saw Nichkhun’s dance and singing skills, I was in doubt about whether he could improve, but now, Nichkhun is the breadwinner at our company,” causing laughter.

The CEO then added that everyone, including Nichkhun himself, was aware that he wasn’t optimistic about Nichkhun’s debut.
