Yang Hyun Suk says “money is not important” when it comes to Psy’s U.S. debut

Money is not important.” These are the words of YG Entertainment‘s CEO Yang Hyun Suk, who has quietly observed the events leading up to Psy‘s upcoming U.S. venture. “It is something we need to more cautiously unravel from here on out,” he continued.

Psy will soon be breaking into the U.S. market. YG Entertainment announced that Psy had signed a contract with Universal Republic Records for his music and will be managed by Scooter Braun (Schoolboy Records) and Island Records.

Through a phone conversation with StarIn that took place the very same day, Yang Hyun Suk remarked, “Something I never even imagined would happen is taking place. Psy has broken all the records set by Korea’s top idol stars. The single fact that his “Gangnam Style” MV received 100 million hits in just 52 days really says something in and of itself.

Ahead of the “Gangnam Style” craze, 2NE1s “I Am The Best” MV recorded 50,000,000 hits on YouTube over the course of one year, and Girls’ Generation‘s “Gee” Mv recorded 84,000,000 over the course of three years. But Psy’s “Gangnam Style” MV hit count is truly the most record-breaking in all of K-Pop history. With Psy now having been given the green light to debut in the States, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what he will be able to accomplish.

Yang Hyun Suk once again realized the importance of doing music that flows from one’s heart and that the artist enjoys, in order for the public to enjoy it as well. Yang remarked, “When you try and pull different tricks in order to force-create a certain type of music or MV to reach a certain goal, the results are often not so great. It was impossible not to look back and think about what kind of musicians are often welcomed with open arms by the public.”

Papa YG is now focusing on the opportunities that await Psy through his U.S. debut. “The more important fact is not that “Gangnam Style” is drawing major popularity, but that the artist is a Korean singer,” Yang Hyun Suk said.

Just as Bae Yong Jun created a Korean drama craze in Japan with ‘Winter Sonata‘, and just as BoA served as the first pioneer for K-Pop overseas, Psy needs to play that kind of role in the States,” he added. “It doesn’t matter how much money Psy makes in the States. He needs to break down obstacles, as well as break down prejudices in regards to Korean artists. Thanks to Psy, artists such as Big Bang, and 2NE1, as well as other Korean artists now have a little more potential when it comes to breaking the world market.”

Within the huge category that is ‘culture’ exists a positive influence that is derived from music alone, and it can help create more value for not only Korea’s national brand, but for business, and the economy,” he continued. “With that said, Psy’s US debut made possible thanks to his self-created fame is something to be praised, and it is also his greatest feat.”

Will Psy be able to maintain his number 1 spot?

Singer Psy has been reigning at the top spot for twelve consecutive days on the music charts, but will he be able to protect his rank even with the release of new tracks from BoA and IU?

On July 26th, Loen Tree released “Sea of Moonlight” and the track has been a hit immediately upon its release, ranking first on Soribada and Bugs as of July 27th 9AM KST. Loen Tree is a group composed of IU, Sunny Hill, Zia, Ga-In, and Fiesta and this track highlights IU’s talented vocals.

Despite the strong competition, Psy has managed to maintain his number one spot on MelOnOlleh Music, and Monkey3 with his hit track “Gangnam Style“. With the song successfully ranking first for twelve consecutive days, it has proven “Gangnam Style” to be one of the greatest songs to be released in 2012.

There is one more singer who can put Psy at risk of maintaining his top perch and that is none other than the Queen of K-Pop, BoA. The singer released her seventh album on July 22nd and has since ranked third behind Psy and Loen Tree on MelOn and Olleh Music’s real time charts, she also second on Monkey3′s real time chart.

How long do you think Psy can maintain his number 1 spot?

B2ST and Psy discuss going head-to-head on music charts

At the press conference for their fifth mini-album ‘Midnight Sun‘ on the 20th, B2ST revealed that they have been enjoying Psy‘s newest tracks from ‘Gangnam Style‘.

Kikwang expressed, “We’ve been enjoying listening to Psy hyung’s songs. They’re really great. However, we are confident in our music as well.”

B2ST went up against Psy on July 15th, the release of Psy’s album and the group’s pre-release track, “Midnight“. ‘Gangnam Style’ came out on top on digital charts while “Midnight” followed closely behind.

Psy commented, “I was surprised myself because I hadn’t expected it. Since it is just a pre-release track, I don’t think it’s fair to call it a full-on battle.”

B2ST’s title track is scheduled for release on the morning of July 22nd, when they’ll be stepping away from their clean image for a more rebellious feel with “Beautiful Night”.

Yoseob stated, “I wanted to put what we learned from our world tour into the album. I learned how to have fun on stage. I feel that there haven’t been many opportunities for us to truly communicate with our fans on stage so far, as our performances have focused more on getting our choreography synchronized or shouting energetically on our own. We lacked communication with the audience, so that’s what [we] wanted to focus on this time. [We] want to show that we, too, are free-spirited men who know what being cool is.”

As of the 21st KST, Psy is leading on major digital charts like Melon and Mnet.
