Artist Kim Jang Hoon, actor Song Il Gook, and several dozen other volunteers will be swimming 55 kilometers (34.2 miles) from the coastline to Dokdo, a small piece of land to the east of the Korean peninsula, to mark Gwangbokjeol, the Korean Independence Day, coming up on August 15th.
The swimmers will swim the 55 kilometers in a relay-like fashion, with each swimmer passing the baton every couple of kilometers until the final swimmer reaches Dokdo.
Starting on the 13th at 6:00 AM, the expected arrival time on the island is 2:00 PM on the 15th. Following the event, a press conference will be held where the swimmers and volunteers will sing the anthem of the Korean freedom fighters.
